Wedding Ceremony Example

Wedding ceremonies can vary based on the couple's wishes. Below is the most traditional example of a ceremony lineup. Options and other possibilities can always be discussed with those involved in the wedding. The songs listed below are merely suggestions and can be replaced with any songs the bride and groom prefer.

Prelude Music

The prelude music traditionally starts 30 minutes before the ceremony. The selections for the prelude music can be a combination of almost any style of music. If a vocalist is part of the service, vocal numbers can also be included in the prelude. The prelude usually requires eight to ten songs.

Ceremony Music

Entrance of the Family

This selection is usually used for seating of grandparents and parents. It can also include special friends or relatives. The music used for this can be classical or pop. Possible songs:

  • Jesu, Joy of Man's Desiring (Bach)
  • Hymne (Vangelis)
  • Twilight and Mist (Horner)

Entrance of the Wedding Party

Unless there is an exceptionally large wedding party, the same song can be used for the groomsmen and bridesmaids as well as the ringbearer(s) and flowergirl(s) if there are any. This song is traditionally classical although it doesn't have to be. Possible songs:

  • Canon in D (Pachelbel)
  • Jesu, Joy of Man's Desiring (Bach)
  • Hymne (Vangelis)
  • Twilight and Mist (Horner)

Entrance of the Bride

Possible songs:

  • Bridal Chorus (Wagner)
  • Trumpet Voluntary (Clarke)

The ceremony may contain a special musical selection. Caution should be used so that long musical numbers do not make the ceremony awkward. This selection can be a prayer that is sung or could be music to accompany lighting of the unity candle.

The recessional is the music that the wedding party and family leave to. Possible songs:

  • Wedding March (Mendlesohn)
  • Hornpipe (Handel)
  • Ode to Joy (Beethoven)
  • How Sweet It Is (James Taylor)
  • Happy Together (The Turtles)
  • Angel Eyes (Jim Brickman)
